Ebook About “Darkly funny and glitteringly satirical, The Atmospherians unforgettably takes aim at wokeness, wellness, and toxic masculinity.” —Esquire This “edgy, addictive” (Kirkus Reviews, starred) satire about two best friends who form The Atmosphere—a cult designed to reform problematic men—is “a book to be devoured” (Vanity Fair).Sasha Marcus was once the epitome of contemporary success: an internet sensation, social media darling, and a creator of a high-profile wellness brand for women. But a confrontation with an abusive troll has taken a horrifying turn, and now she’s at rock bottom: canceled and doxxed online, isolated in her apartment while men’s rights protestors rage outside. Sasha confides in her oldest childhood friend, Dyson—a failed actor with a history of body issues—who hatches a plan for her to restore her reputation by becoming the face of his new business venture, The Atmosphere: a rehabilitation community for men. Based in an abandoned summer camp and billed as a workshop for job training, it is actually a rigorous program designed to rid men of their toxic masculinity. Sasha has little choice but to accept. But what horrors await her as the resident female leader of a crew of washed up, desperate men? And what exactly does Dyson want? Explosive, dazzling, and wickedly funny, The Atmospherians is “a book written with this exact cultural moment in mind” (Oprah Daily).Book The Atmospherians: A Novel Review :
I had to read The Atmospherians as soon as I heard the premise: a retreat (or cult) to teach white men to fade into the background rather than always striving for the lead actor in any situation.Despite the book's being a satire, most characters are movingly, sympathetically drawn. This is especially true when McElroy delves into the troubled childhoods of the two main characters, Sasha (who narrates most of the book) and Dyson. That said, everyone in the book is deeply flawed, often due to social pressures, and you end up rooting for no one. A particularly vivid example of this is a speech Sasha gives in which she goes off script to legitimately attack an organization that is basically using her trauma for their own gain. This may look on its surface heroic. Sasha, however, is using the speech to boost her own ego / brand and ignores how helping the organization could benefit the greater good. The rich investors she is attacking cheer her criticism, and she goes home to vomit and cry. There are no winners or heroes. The Atmopsherians has been called dystopian, but the gender and social media issues it addresses are present day. The one fantastical element is “man hordes,” groups of white men suddenly banding together in a sort of trance to accomplish random productive or destructive tasks. As a white man, I have always felt wary of becoming a part of a large group of men due to seeing what such groups can do, e.g. in sporting events, so I didn’t feel this construct was all that fantastical. Women aren’t let off the hook either: Sasha’s third act is particularly chilling. The book is an entertaining, thought-provoking and damning critique of current gender pressures and how they are continually amplified by social media. One of the most gorgeous, brave, funny, deeply human books I’ve ever read. There’s nothing quite like The Atmospherians, which is like the greatest guilty pleasure cult read combined with gripping prose poetry. The structure itself is fascinating, how we’re transported in terms of narrative style and time itself… such a lofty feat of a book that for me pays off hugely. It hollowed me out while also making me laugh aloud at times. I can’t say enough good things about this brilliant novel.
